by Richard Guilfoyle

In Sweden there has been a great increase in interest in furniture and design, to the point that it is just as important to expressing personality as the clothing one wears. Similar to fashion in clothing, Stockholm is a leading area for furniture and interior design, and since it is one of the most modern cities in the world there is certainly something to be found here for everyone, regardless of budget or style.

POM or Piece of Mind is a furniture company that starts to conceptualize by asking why products that should exist do not. They then manufacture to bring such products to life. Some of the big players in the Stockholm furniture business are: Stalands Möbler which features timeless designs, DUX beds (sängar), and Ekero Möbler.

Länna Möbler came back from the recent furniture fair with a list of their customers' wishes and opinions, and they have developed their new line around them. Bromma Möbler offers sturdy, good-quality furniture from all over the world. Quality furniture is also available from Carlssons Möbler, which has been the family business for three generations. G.A.D., a Gotland-based company that also has a strong presence in Stockholm, crafts custom furniture.

If you really love home furnishings you should be sure to get to the SoFo quarter of Stockholm. You will discover a thrilling assortment of thrift shops, sample outlets, items crafted with Feng-Shui in mind, and lots of traditional pieces from the middle of the 20th Century, which are extremely popular these days. Naturally, you'll also come across such famous names as IKEA, Mio and EM.

One of the biggest gatherings for Scandinavian furniture lovers is the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Stockholm Furniture displays many of their pieces during this fair, one particular section being the Greenhouse. The Greenhouse section is where many international design schools and new designers have great opportunity to show off their work. This Furniture Fair runs in parallel to the Northern Light Fair, which is Scandinavia's lighting exhibition.
